Article in the “PR Daily Sun” / Artículo en el periódico “PR Daily Sun”

Journalist Rafael Díaz Torres recently penned a great feature article where he discusses the discriminating language found in two resolutions passed by the Puerto Rican Legislative Assembly. The resolutions congratulated both the Men’s and Women’s National Basketball Teams for winning gold in the PanAm Games. In his article, he quotes from my latest column in Revista Cruce. El periodista Rafael Díaz Torres escribió un gran artículo de fondo en el que discute el lenguaje discriminatorio de dos resoluciones de felicitaciones pasadas por la Asamblea Legislativa. Ambas resoluciones felicitaban a las Selecciones Nacionales de Baloncesto por haber ganado oro en el baloncesto Panamericano. En su artículo, Díaz Torres cita de mi última columna, “12 baloncelistas: Disparidades por género en el básquet puertorriqueño”. Entrevista en el programa “Periodismo Libre” / Interview on “Periodismo Libre”

El lunes 7 de noviembre, a las 6:00 pm hora de Puerto Rico (5:00 pm ET), saldrá al aire por la emisora Radio Activa una entrevista que me hicieron para el programa “Periodismo Libre” del Centro para la Libertad de Prensa en Puerto Rico. I was recently interviewed for the show “Periodismo Libre” of the Center for Freedom of the Press. The interview, which was about media literacy and sports, will air on Monday November 7^th at 6:00 pm Puerto Rico time (5:00 pm ET) through Radio Activa. Online Presentation at the IVLA 2011 / Presentación en línea en la IVLA 2011

On October 1st, 2011 I presented partial results of my doctoral dissertation at the 43^rd Annual Conference of the International Visual Literacy Association in an online presentation entitled: “After Further Review”: Utilizing Sports Media to Assess Visual Literacy.

Este pasado 1ero de octubre de 2011, tuve la oportunidad de presentar remotamente resultados parciales de mi tesis doctoral en el 43 Congreso Anual de la Asociación Internacional de Alfabetización Visual. El título de la presentación era: “After Further Review”: Utilizing Sports Media to Assess Visual Literacy.

 

 

De columnista en la Revista Cruce / Writing for Cruce, a digital zine of the Metropolitan University

Recientemente, la Escuela de Ciencias Sociales, Humanidades y Comunicaciones de la Universidad Metropolitana de Puerto Rico (UMet) lanzó su nueva revista digital Cruce. Cruce es, como bien dice su propio eslogan, una revista de crítica socio-cultural contemporánea. Me alegra compartir que la junta editorial de Cruce me invitó a participar como columnista fijo de la revista. Mis escritos saldrán publicados una vez al mes en la plataforma digital. En este espacio me dedicaré a analizar el mundo deportivo desde la óptica de la crítica socio-cultural, política y económica. Recently, the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Communications of the Universidad Metropolitana de Puerto Rico (UMet) launched their new digital zine Cruce. Cruce, as their tagline aptly says, is a digital publication dedicated to contemporary sociocultural critique. I am happy to announce that the editorial board at Cruce invited me to be one of their columnists. My articles will be published once a month and they will be dedicated to analyzing the SportsWorld from a sociocultural, political, and economic standpoint. My first column was published August 29th, 2011.

 

 

“After Further Review”: Sports, Media, and Society – Special Topics course / Curso especial

I am very pleased to announce that in the winter term of 2011 I will be teaching, for the first time, a course I proposed and developed. The course is entitled “After Further Review”: Sports, Media and Society and it is a third year course in the Media, Information and Technology (MIT) program at the University of Western Ontario. The course will be divided into two main parts: 1) the business and industry side of sports coverage and 2) issues of identity politics (gender, race, sexuality, nation, etc)  in sports coverage.

Me alegra poder decir que en el semestre de invierno del 2011 enseñaré, por primera vez, un curso nuevo propuesto y desarrollado completamente por mí. El curso se titula, en inglés, “After Further Review”: Sports, Media, and Society y es un curso de tercer año en la especialidad de Medios, Información y Tecnología (MIT) de la Universidad de Western Ontario. La clase se dividirá en dos áreas principales: 1) el negocio y la industria de la cobertura mediática de los deportes y 2) asuntos relacionados a las políticas de la identidad (raza, sexualidad, género, nación, etc) en la cobertura mediática de los deportes. Nueva publicación / New publication

En la edición de agosto del periódico Diálogo, salió publicada una entrevista que le hicimos Selma Feliciano Arroyo y yo al teórico post-colonialista Ngugi wa Thiong’o. Desafortunadamente, la versión que salió publicada no es igual a la que mi compañera escritora y yo sometimos. La persona encargada de la edición hizo una serie de cambios que, francamente, me parecen desacertados. El primer cambio fue el título. El título original “A colapsar las jerarquías lingüísticas: Entrevista con Ngugi wa Thiong’o”, se refería al punto principal que expuso el Dr. wa Thiong’o en su conferencia magistral. El título nuevo “Ngugi wa Thiong’o: Creyente en el multilingüismo” es un título abstracto y general que no tiene la misma connotación política que nuestro título original. Por demás, también le hicieron una serie de cambios de reorganización que rompieron la fluidez y la coherencia general de la introducción que escribimos. Por estas razones, me siento obligado a poner aquí la entrevista original sometida por Selma y por mi.

The August edition of the Puerto Rican newspaper Diálogo included an interview of postcolonial theorist Ngugi wa Thiong’o written by Selma Feliciano-Arroyo and me. Unfortunately, the version published differs from the one we submitted. The person in charge of editing the piece made a series of changes which, frankly, I think were not appropriate. One of those changes, for example, was the title. Our original title, “Collapsing linguistic hierarchies: An interview with Ngugi wa Thiong’o”, was directly related to Ngugi’s main argument in his Keynote Address at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. The new title “Ngugi wa Thiong’o: Believer in Multilingualism” is an abstract and general title that lacks the political connotation of Ngugi’s message. Also, there were a series of changes in terms of reorganization of the article that broke the flow and coherence of our introduction. This is why I feel compelled to publish here the original version (in Spanish; English to follow later).

 

Gran tramo recorrido / Big milestone completed

Gracias a Dios hoy, 27 de mayo de 2009, terminé con éxito mi proceso de exámenes de grado.  Hoy, oficialmente, paso a ser candidato doctoral. No saben lo mucho que significa este logro para mí. Quiero agradecer a mi comité por haberme ayudado a constituir la lista de textos y por hacerme un examen riguroso y justo.

Today, May 27th 2009, I completed the process of my comprehensive examinations, thank God. I am now, officially, a Ph.D. Candidate in Media Studies. I can’t begin to explain what this means to me. I would like to thank my committee for helping me with my reading list and for giving me a rigorous and fair examination.

… para un premio GSTA (Graduate Student Teaching Award)! Desafortunadamente, no gané, pero me siento orgulloso de haber recibido una nominación. Las nominaciones para estos premios las someten los/as estudiantes de uno/a, así que eso implica que al menos un/a estudiante quedó satisfecho con mi tutorial. Muchas gracias a quien(es) me haya(n) nominado.

…. for a Graduate Student Teaching Award! Unfortunately, I did not win, but I am still proud to have been nominated. These nominations are submitted by the students in our tutorials, so that means that at least one student was satisfied with the way I taught the tutorial. Thanks to whoever thought enough of me to nominate me!
